PWdb.mobi is the main access channel to the Physical World Database project and returns complete and unabridged content for the purpose of object hyperlinking with mobile devices.
A hardlink, one method of object hyperlinking, is recognized on a physical object as an alphanumeric sequence preceded by two forward slashes. A hardlink serves as a reference to additional information about the object.
The most common use case of this archive is by a user that is in close physical vicinity of the object of interest and has discovered a hardlink on the object. The user then accesses the object related information using one of a number of possible access methods that may include barcode technology, RFID or manual entry of a URL (Channel ID).
The PWdb interface is compatible with all known mobile devices. However, some user created internal links may reference remote content that is not.
PWdb was founded in 2006 as a not-for-profit archive of information about physical world objects having historical and or educational significance.
Select files in this database are shared with other archive services including InternetArchive.org for the purpose of long-term data survival. |
